- Rock hounding - Western Marquette County is famous for its unique rocks
and gemstones. Visit Japer Knob, site of the "World's Largest Gemstone," located in Ishpeming; or view unusual quartz formations behind the Quartz Mountain Inn in Negaunee. For more information, contact the Ishpeming Chamber, 906-486-4841
- Waterfalls - Black River Falls, 8 miles southwest of Ishpeming. Take
U.S. Highway 41 west to stop light, turn left onto Lakeshore Drive, turn right at Washington Street; follow Washington to the four-way stop, turn right onto County Road 581. At approximately 8 miles, entrance road will be on the right with a DNR sign for Black River Falls Campground. The hotel's front desk has a free detailed map of other area waterfalls.

Wawonowin Golf Club - County Road 478, West of Ishpeming, 906-485-5560 or 906-485-1435. 18 professionally designed and challenging holes makes this one of the U.P.’s most popular courses. Please reserve a tee time 24 hours prior. Red Fox Run - 217 5th Street, Gwinn, 906-346-7010. A championship 18-hole golf course offering lessons, driving range, a golf pro shop and more. Pro course measures 6,075 yards. The men's course is 5,854 yards, and women's course is 4,651 yards. All are par 70. Gentz's Homestead Golf Course - 353 Gentz Road, Marquette, 906-249-1002. A professionally designed course including driving range, nine golf holes and club and cart rental. Lessons available in the spring. Total course measures 2,220 yards and is par 36. - Snowmobiling - Ishpeming's Country Village is in the center of the
U.P.'s extensive trail system and offers over 500 miles of trails right from their parking lot. Snowmobile rentals are also available at ACE Hardware, 906-485-1870. The Country Village Resort is one of the Best Snowmobiling Destinations in the Upper Peninsula. If snowmobiling is your thrill, you'll enjoy the area's beauty along more than 500 miles of groomed interconnecting trails that join the 2,500 miles of Upper Peninsula trails. - Mountain Biking - The Ishpeming area is surrounded by several trail
systems, including the Range Mountain Bike Trails. This trail system utilizes 25 miles of scenic wilderness and meanders from Ishpeming to Negaunee and back. The trail begins behind the Jasper Ridge Brewery and utilizes cross-country trails that wind through forested areas, featuring a variety of terrain, elevation, and plant and animal life. Whether you're a blacktop biker or a hardcore trailblazer looking to bike through the city or head into the woods, cycling opportunities in the Ishpeming area abound. - Cross-Country Skiing - The Ishpeming area is home to a variety of trails
for skiers of all different levels, from beginner to advanced. Maps are available at the front desk. Also featuring the Spectacular Noquemanon ski race in February.
- Beaches/Swimming - Marquette County is home to over 80 inland lakes with

- Canoeing - Take to the majestic lakes and rivers of Marquette County for
quality canoeing and paddling opportunities. Experience the serenity of scenic inland lakes and streams as well as the challenge of rougher waters. Outstanding adventures await both the novice canoer and seasoned paddler. Guided tours along the shores of Lake Superior and other regions are offered throughout the summer. - Small & Large Game Hunting - One of the biggest draws to the Upper Peninsula in autumn are the firearm bird and deer hunting seasons. The small game season has thousands of eager hunters walking our wilderness roads and exploring the beautiful autumn scenery.

- Fishing - Whether you're an experienced angler or a recreational fisherman looking to toss in a line or two, countless opportunities for rewarding fun and enjoyment are available. Ishpeming is surrounded by an abundance of superior fishing locations. Most sites contain public boat launches offering easy access to a variety of fish species, including walleye, northern pike, perch, tiger muskie, lake trout, sunfish, blue gill, crappie, bass and others.

- Al Quaal Recreation area:(906) 486-4841 This beautiful outdoor area offers a well-rounded selection of year-round activities. In the winter, experience the thrill of the 1500-foot iced toboggan slide (Open weeknights 4-9 PM; Weekends 1-9 PM;
minimal charge). Enjoy challenging downhill skiing serviced by three rope tows (Open Sat. & Sun. afternoons; Wed. & Thurs. evenings). Try one of the cross-country and ski touring trails. Snow shoeing and snowmobile trails are also available. During the summer, the Al Quaal Area offers an ideal setting for a family picnic, a canoe ride on adjoining Teal Lake, a friendly game of horseshoes or the chance to take in a softball game.
- . Moose Drop - In 1985 and 1987, 59 moose were transplanted from the Algonquin National Park in Ontario, Canada, to a release site six miles north of Van Riper State Park. A slow drive through the area north of the park may reward you with the site of one of these majestic animals.
